Martin Heidegger, a German existential philosopher, defined architecture saying, “Human being consists in dwelling and, indeed, dwelling in the sense of the stay of mortals on the earth.” Perhaps Heidegger saw in the places we call home a series of life activities in which people are born and die while multiple households live together under one roof? I too was greatly moved to see people making the most of their lives through the creative use of their limited space. They naturally create a unique cityscape of their own.

독일의 실존철학자 마르틴 하이데거는 건축을 “인간이 죽을 자로서 지상에 거주하는 한 방식”이라고 정의했다. 어쩌면 하이데거는 한 지붕 아래 여러 세대 사람들이 함께 어우러져 살면서 누군가는 태어나고, 누군가는 죽어 사라지는 일련의 삶의 행보를 집이라는 공간 속에서 포착해냈던 것이 아닐까? 나 역시 많은 인간의 삶이 공간의 재활용으로 극대화되고, 그것이 자연스럽게 이색적인 풍경으로 어우러지는 모습을 우리나라의 옛날 주택가에서 발견했다. 그리고 그 모습들은 깊은 감동과 울림으로 다가왔다.
