Beginning in the early 1970s, most Korean cities, large and small, continued to build and then tear down new structures. These new structures tend to look very much alike instead of displaying any individuality that would be suitable to each city. Old, deteriorating single-family and multi-family dwellings or apartments are demolished to construct new high-rise apartment complexes, a trend which became the norm at some point.

As a consequence, the new apartments going up in major Korean cities all have a rather uniform look with no trace of individuality or character. This new norm in redevelopment with no consideration of a city’s history or character is slowly removing any distinction between them.
Kyungsook Kim divided Korea’s major cities into four commonly recognized categories. First are the “teukbyeol-si” (special city) which includes Seoul Special City, Sejong Special Self-Governing City and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. Second are the “gwangyeok-si” (metropolitan city) which includes Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Ulsan, Gwangju and Busan. Third are the provincial capitals which are Suwon, Chuncheon, Cheongju, Andong and Jeonju. Fourth are the “traditional cities” which include Chungju, Sangju, Gyeongju and Naju, all of which were once prominent cities but whose status is now somewhat lower.

In these 18 cities, she photographed structures targeted for redevelopment, generally the oldest and most dilapidated structures built in the modern era, and also the most expensive apartment buildings. Then, she combined and juxtaposed these two contrasting images layer by layer, as if laying bricks, to complete her images.

대한민국의 크고 작은 도시는 지난 1970년대 초반부터 생성과 소멸을 거듭하며 개성적이기 보다는 정형화된 모습을 보이고 있다. 과거에 건축된 낡고 오래된 단독주택이나 아파트를 헐고 고층아파트가 건설되고 있다. 언제부터인가 보편화된 재건축의 결과물이다.

그 결과 전국의 주요 도시에 재건축된 아파트의 외관 및 구조가 개성적이기 보다는 일률적이고 차별성이 사라졌다. 주요 도시의 역사적인 배경이나 특성과 관계없이 획일적인 모습으로 재개발되어 도시마다 고유한 개성이 사라지고 있다.
우리나라 주요도시를 특별시(서울특별시, 세종특별자치시, 제주특별자치도), 광역시(인천광역시, 대전광역시, 대구광역시, 울산광역시, 광주광역시, 부산광역시), 도청소재지(수원시, 춘천시, 청주시, 안동시, 전주시)와 전통 도시(충주시, 상주시, 경주시, 나주시-과거에는 각 도 지명의 한 요소일정도로 컸으나 이제는 중요도가 낮아진 도시)로 행정단위 중요도를 기준으로 분류하였다.

그리고 18개 각 도시 재개발대상인 지역의 집-즉 근대 도시로서 건축된 가장 오래되고 낡은 건축물-과 그 도시에서 가장 고가인 아파트를 촬영하여 벽돌을 켜켜이 쌓듯이 레이어를 겹겹이 놓아 작품을 완성하였다.
